Unexplained boom baffles experts, residents: heard in four Illinois counties

The Extinction Protocol

March 21, 2013ILLINOISThe mystery of the “loud boom” heard in parts of the region over the weekend may go unsolved, as efforts to find the source of the boom proved a bust Monday. Hundreds of people in at least four counties — Franklin, Hamilton, Saline and Williamson — flocked to social media to report hearing a windows-rattling, earth-shaking boom between 1 and 2 p.m. Saturday. No damages or injuries were reported as a result of the boom. “I have no way of knowing exactly what occurred but it was not likely an earthquake,” geophysicist Don Blakeman of the National Earthquake Information Center said. “There is nothing on our lists, only the last one on the 11th (near Benton).” Some earthquakes are heard as well as felt, he said, but if it was so widespread as to be heard in four counties, “We would be able to…

Sinkhole swallows California pond overnight

The Extinction Protocol

March 21, 2013CALIFORNIAOvernight, a sinkhole swallowed a pond on Mark Korb’s property in Newcastle, Calif. When he went to bed Saturday night, the pond was there. On Sunday, March 17 it was gone. How does that happen? While northern California is nowhere near as prone to sinkholes as Florida (see USGS sinkhole map), one clue might be the fact that the pond was man-made. While sinkholes don’t need a human trigger; changes in drainage due to construction or agricultural irrigation have been known to activate mass outbreaks of sinkholes in Florida, and other parts of the country. As The Christian Science Monitor reported earlier this month after a Florida man was swallowed in his bed by a sinkhole, “Drought followed by heavy rains can also instigate sinkholes as heavy, water-logged earth presses down on limestone caves suddenly devoid of buoyant water. The two previous deaths attributed…

The Extinction Protocol

March 18, 2013HIGH POINT, NCThere are several reports from Saturday night of a meteor gliding across the Carolina skies. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a large bolide meteor that split into several pieces. First Warn Storm Spotter Stuart McDaniel caught it all on his sky camera. McDaniel lives in Northern Cleveland County.  In his video, the fast moving meteor moved rapidly across the sky growing bigger and bigger then fading away. McDaniel isn’t the only one who saw the meteor; the American Meteorologist Society received 55 reports about this fireball seen over Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Nearly half of the reports were from Ohio. –WCNC

Florida red tide

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. –  A deadly algae bloom is causing a record number of manatee deaths in Florida, state biologists said.

A red tide bloom has been killing ten or more manatees a day and the deadly algae bloom shows no sign of letting up any time soon, the Tampa Bay Times reported on Friday.

‘This is probably going to be the worst die-off in history.’

‘Large release’ of methane off Los Angeles coast: gas could be from shift in tectonic plates

more ‘bitter waters’ (wormwood prophecy from the Book of Revelations)

The Extinction Protocol

March 6, 2013CALIFORNIAAuthorities say a foul odor that spurred calls to fire departments throughout the city on Sunday is possibly the result of the large release of methane in the Santa Monica Bay. Santa Monica Fire said in a department statement that they believe the strong odor was caused by a naturally occurring methane leak below the ocean floor. “This morning there was a large release of natural ocean floor methane released in the Santa Monica Bay,” the statement said. Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles City Fire Department, said the odor was noted inland from the Santa Monica Bay. Santa Monica fire haz-mat crews detected rather unusual concentrations of odorless methane gas in the air that they believed to be coming from either a patch of pungent algae, or a sulfurous gas-laced methane bubble, said a dispatcher. That may night be the case…
